Transition from lower to upper secondary level

Many adolescents experience difficulties at the transition from compulsory education to upper secondary level. From 2006 to 2010, cantons, the Confederation and professional organisations implemented the Nahtstelle project (interface project) in order to analyse problems and to take measures for improvement of the transition from compulsory education to upper secondary level. Examples of measures of the Nahtstelle project include improvement of career selection processes, better coordination between the requirements of lower secondary level and those of upper secondary level (requirement profiles for vocational education and training), early identification and support of problem students already in compulsory education (case management), and identification of success factors for adolescents with difficult initial conditions to successfully get through vocational education and training (VET). The measures designed to improve the transition between compulsory education and upper secondary level are continuing. 95% of those leaving compulsory education start an upper secondary level programme within two years.
