Core times

Core times apply to school organisation and concentrate teaching time within larger time units. Clearly laid-out school time structures help working parents in particular, with regard to the organisation of family-based day care. With core times, the lessons are bundled to form complete half-days. Different core time models are implemented according to the local conditions and requirements (e.g. different extension times). With "comprehensive" core times, the pupils are in the care of the school on five mornings for at least three and a half hours (or during four lessons) and on one to four afternoons, depending on age. The majority of the cantons have schools with comprehensive core times.

The Intercantonal Agreement on Harmonisation of Compulsory Education (HarmoS Agreement) obliges the cantons that join to organise the teaching at primary school level with an emphasis on core times.
